Perspective, Storytelling, Exposure & Representation is powerful.
Couldn’t rap (& still can’t lol) & my hoop dreams were deflated a LONG time ago but I wanted to inspire folks young & old, men and women alike. If not through my verses or how well I balled on the court, at least through my words, stories, interests & actions. I want folks to see the good, bad & the ugly. I’ve made many mistakes & I’ve done a lot of dumb shit along the way. I’ve smiled the biggest of smiles & I’ve shed the biggest of tears.
Growing up in a single-parent home, I jokingly say that the internet, TV & my PlayStation were my babysitters. Moms was always out working to make ends meet & pops wasn’t around, so those (along with Men & Women who took me under their wing) were my sources of self-education outside of the classroom. I saw how powerful it was for younger me to see men who looked like me & could relate to me, doing big shit in the world & most importantly being carefree & having fun in the process.
It’s important that men of color (In particular) express & tell their stories regardless of what space you’re in. Self-Ownership is the key to confidence. We are often too afraid to own what it is that makes us who we are which in turn, impacts our confidence. It’s not about being “perfect” it’s not about being the “hardest” dude, the most fly, etc. It’s about just being you.
My hope is that some young kids, older males & even women can stumble across my page/site & know that anything is possible.
A reminder to them that regardless of the blemishes or roadblocks we are still able to rise and that we are always Kings & Queens.
A reminder we aren’t alone in our journey.
A reminder that they too should tell their stories.
A reminder that you can work hard & on occasion have fun…balance.
A reminder that you can bounce back. Regardless of the mistakes you make. Trusting the process.
A reminder that it ain’t the end of the road if your music or athletic career doesn’t take off.
A reminder that there are MANY alternatives out here to make a name for yourself & to make a living.
